Pasadena, CA — The Labor Department revealed that jobless claims rose by 2,000 to 484,000 for the week ending on August 7. It was the highest increase since February for both the weekly rate and the four week average.

Overall, about 9.8 million people were getting unemployment benefits and 14.6 million total unemployed. The increase is partly a result of the new extended benefits that was passed by the Senate. According to the Labor Department, private sector job openings decreased for the second straight month in June. The number of available jobs went down from 2.6 million in May to 2.54 million in June. This data comes from the counting of job openings on the last day of the month.

Although, the Labor Department and several economic commentators continue to predict a weak labor market for the foreseeable future, Hound, a job search engine has been able to add a total of over 99,000 jobs in the last seven days. The site overall has a list of over 645,000. The main sectors with most job openings available on Hound are customer service jobs (26,405), engineering jobs (54,515), financial services jobs (30,729), healthcare (134,940), and information technology (60,114).
