PetSmart was founded in the late 1980s by Jim and Janice Dougherty in Arizona. The couple secured a venture capital loan from the Phillips Van Heusen Corporation and subsequently became incorporated as Pacific Coast Distributing Inc.

In 1990, the company began inviting mobile clinics into the store locations for pet vaccination and check-up services. Two years later the company's Authority nutrition food brand was introduced, along with Grreat Choice and Sophista-Cat. Between 1993 and 2007, PetSmart acquired a number of businesses in the US, Canada, and the United Kingdom including Unipet Distributors, Weisheimer Companies Inc., PetStuff Inc., Pet Food Giant, Sporting Dog Specialties, Inc., Pet City Holdings, PLC, and Super Pet Stores. All of the company's United Kingdom stores were sold in 1999.
