Nordstrom had its beginnings in 1901 as a Seattle shoe store. The store was founded by Carl Wallin and John W. Nordstrom, who came to the US from Sweden in 1887. As a 16-year-old boy, Nordstrom entered the US with five dollars and a desire to work. He initially worked in mines and logging camps as he worked his way across the US but eventually ended up in Alaska, searching for gold. He did manage to earn $13,000 in a gold mine stake before returning to Seattle, where he joined forces with Wallin and opened Wallin & Nordstrom. Two years later, the partners opened a second shoe store and the company soon grew into the largest independent US shoe chain. In the late 1920s, Nordstrom and Wallis retired and the company was bought out by Nordstrom’s sons.

In the 1960s Nordstrom purchased Best Apparel, thus entering the apparel market. In 1966 the company obtained an Oregon fashion store, combined it with its existing Portland shoe store, and changed its name to Nordstrom Best. In the 1970s, the company went public and officially took on the name Nordstrom, Inc. Shortly thereafter, the company opened is first Nordstrom Rack retail location in Seattle.

In addition to its fashion locations, Nordstrom also offers banking services through its wholly-owned subsidiary, Nordstrom Bank. The bank, which is a federally chartered savings bank, was formed with the intention of accommodating Nordstrom customers by providing convenience products such as Nordstrom credit, debit, and check card products.

Nordstrom is committed to promoting from within whenever possible. The company offers employment opportunities in sales, operations, support services, distribution, information technology, and at Nordstrom spa locations, Nordstrom restaurant and specialty coffee bar locations, and within the Seattle headquarters.

Other benefits include an employee stock purchase plan, Nordstrom bank and federal credit union access, a commuter flexible spending account, dependent care flexible spending account, and a health care flexible spending account.
