Office Depot serves a wide range of customers, from individuals to businesses, directly and through its affiliates in 53 countries. The company operates through the following three business segments: the North American Retail Division, the North American Business Solutions Division, and the International Division.

The company's North American Retail Division offers general office supplies, computer supplies, business machines, office furniture, Copy & Print Depotâ„¢, PC support, network installation services, and more. The retail division operates through a chain of 1,100 office supply stores throughout the US and Canada, with the largest concentration of stores in California, Texas, and Florida.




The North America Business Solutions Division sells nationally branded and private brand products through catalogs and internet sites. Products include technical products, furniture, and services.

The International Division serves customers in North America, Europe, Asia, and Latin America. Products and services through this division are offered via direct marketing catalogs, contract sales, internet sales, and retail stores. The International Division operates both wholly-owned entities and majority-owned entities, in addition to participating in other ventures throughout 41 countries. The company also has alliances in 12 other countries.

Office Depot was founded in 1986 when its first retail store opened in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Within two years of going public, in 1988, the company had 173 stores throughout 27 states. 1990 brought a merger with The Office Club, Inc., which resulted in the creation of the largest North American office products retailer. With the 1992 acquisition of H.Q. Office International, Inc., the company also gained the Great Canadian Office Supplies Warehouse chain of western Canada. Shortly thereafter, Office Depot opened retail stores in Israel and Colombia. The company further expanded with the acquisitions of Wilson Stationary & Printing Company and Eastman Office Products Corporation in 1993. Stores were opened in Poland, Hungary, Thailand, Mexico, France, and Japan between the years of 1995 to 1998. Office Depot's 1998 merger with Viking Office Products made it a world leader in office products and services. In the same year, Office Depot launched the first of its many websites, officedepot.com. In 1999, the company's first European e-commerce site was launched in the United Kingdom.

Today, Office Depot employs 40,000 individuals worldwide.
