The $15.3 billion company began in 1806, when William Colgate opened a starch, soap, and candle business in New York City. In 1837 the business started producing toothpaste and in 1857 the company was organized as ''Colgate and Company''. B.J Johnson then opened a soap factory in Milwaukee in 1864, which would later become the Palmolive Company. The Palmolive Company was named after the success of the palm and olive oil soap created by Johnson in 1898. The ''Peet Brothers'', a Kansas based soap producer, merged with Palmolive and in 1928, Palmolive Peet purchased the Colgate Company. ''Peet was dropped from the title in 1953, creating the Colgate-Palmolive Company as it is known today.

In 2006, Colgate-Palmolive released news of the acquisition of Tom's of Maine, a producer of cruelty-free and environmentally-friendly oral care and hygiene products. Colgate-Palmolive is currently listed on the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) list of companies that do test on animals. This caused of concern for consumers who relied on Tom's of Maine for products free from animal tests. While Tom's of Maine products are still test-free, Colgate-Palmolive's website states that animal testing is used as a last resort for other products. The company voluntarily suspended all animal testing on products in adult personal care in 1999. Colgate-Palmolive also claims to supervise all necessary animal testing, however, it is unclear how they monitor the conditions due to the fact that all testing is performed by outside contractors at outside laboratories.
