Founded in 1974, Tech Data got its start marketing data processing supplies for mini and mainframe computer users. By 1983, Tech Data had expanded and redirected their efforts to servicing microcomputer resellers as a wholesale distributor. Tech Data expanded into Canada in 1989 and the Latin American market in 1993, and then purchased their largest Canadian competitor Globelle in 1999 to complete their North American market. Tech Data expanded into Europe with the purchase of Softmart International, S.A, France’s largest personal computer distributor in 1994, and Munich-based Computer 2000 in 1998.
