Activision, one of the largest and most successful publishers of computer and console games in the world today, is a subsidiary of French owned Vivendi. As an independent publisher, Activision is responsible for the mega hit line series of Guitar Hero titles as well as other popular games including Call of Duty. From its inception in 1979, Activision has been an innovator in console and computer games. It was the first 3^rd party developer and publisher of video games in an industry where game titles were produced exclusively by the companies that manufactured the game consoles. These companies did not credit the game designers individually, causing four programmers to break away from Atari and join up with a venture capitalist and music industry executive to form Activision. Under Activision, game designers and programmers were credited both in the game itself and within the user manual. Activision was soon followed and imitated by now defunct MicroProse and contemporary rival Electronic Arts. In 2008, Activision was acquired by Vivendi and joined Blizzard, publisher of the popular World of Warcraft game, under the banner Activision Blizzard.

Activision's corporate headquarters is located in Southern California and the company has studios scattered throughout California as well as in Texas, Minnesota and New York. Sales offices are located in Texas, Minnesota and Arkansas.
