How to Get a Job in a Restaurant With No Experience

 Dated: 12-10-2009

A good number of people regard restaurant work as elementary or 'entry level' and don't realize exactly how much hard work, effort and time go into running a restaurant efficiently. This having been said, you've got to keep a few things in mind as you head into your interview for the open positions at that new restaurant in town, hoping to get your foot in the door.

First off, do not go into your job interview with any sort of attitude. Yes, it's probably true that just about anyone can be a dishwasher. But in today's economy, there are a goodly number of people going after that position. Coming off as arrogant or lackadaisical during the interview process won't be helping your odds of employment. Try your best to come off as an energized and engaging person.

Secondly, be well dressed. Use the dress code of the job you're hoping to obtain as a guide, just take it a step higher. If the uniform for your potential position is a pair of black pants and a polo shirt, take it up a step and wear a pair of black slacks and pair it with a nice button down, long sleeved shirt. You should also keep in mind a few things that are never acceptable for a job interview; torn or dirty jeans, strapless tops, flip flops, baseball caps. Your best bet is to wear something you're comfortable in. Chances are you'll be anxious enough, you don't need to feel out of place in your own skin.

And finally, be prepared. Think over some basic interview questions and mentally prepare answers. Get there a little early so you have a chance to feel a little at ease. When you go to your interview, take with you a copy of your resume and references. You'd also do well to bring your drivers license and Social Security card. If you've followed these preparation steps, they just might hire you on the spot!
