A principal auditor is responsible for monitoring and reviewing of the strategic and operational work plans of the service and the progress and delivery of the service. The position may also be involved in predominantly high level, risk based, business reviews of core processes. Responsibilities include evaluating complex systems and undertaking substantive testing of key controls. A principal auditor leads and contributes to audits and special investigations, and undertakes independent and objective reviews of operations and services, including systems, computers, and contracts. Reporting to a director, the principal auditor deputizes the internal audit manager.
A principal auditor should have a degree in accountancy and preferably a CPA degree. Experience of 8+ years in the area of internal audit, business assurance, and risk management may be required for most positions. A good understanding of risk and risk-based internal auditing procedures would also be helpful.
