Head Chef

A head chef is an experienced chef capable of leading and developing a small team of chefs/cooks to deliver good quality food. Head chefs are capable of preparing, cooking, and serving all consumables as required by Management while complying with policies on quality, quantity, food hygiene, and portion control. They work with the Management team to ensure that the kitchen is operating efficiently and effectively.

The responsibilities of a head chef include: making sure consumables are available as required by the Management; enforcing kitchen, personal, and food hygiene within the kitchen; completing the induction of all new kitchen staff in liaison with Management; controlling staff, providing work rotas etc.; preparing the main element of principal meals; ensuring the correct use of all kitchen equipment; ensuring the correct use of all food stocks issued; ensuring the smooth running of the kitchen, including the management of staff.

Head chefs should have excellent leadership skills. Bulk of their job involves: inspiring and motivating the team to achieve food to specification and therefore achieve sales and profits; leading by example, setting the pace and standards; training and developing the team to deliver food to specification and therefore exceed customer?s expectations; and praising and recognising good performance.
