When It Is Time to Fire a Problem Employee – 5 Signs That Say “NOW”

When It Is Time to Fire a Problem Employee – 5 Signs That Say “NOW”

  1. Wrong Attitude and Aptitude - Every job requires a good match of personal soft skills and aptitude with the responsibilities of the job. For example, a flight attendant cannot be short-tempered or forgetful. This would interfere with the efficiency with which the job is performed. If you find that the employee's attitude is mismatched with the job, and that interferes with their productivity, it is time to let them go.

  2. No Will to Work - There are times when you get employees who will do everything else but their job when they are at the workplace. They will chat, drink coffee, have long lunches, come late and leave early, push their work on to other employees, and make fun of those who do work hard. You need to get rid of these types of employees very quickly, for they will corrupt the work culture and derail productivity at work.

  3. The 'Blame It on Others' Employee - Every office has one of these types. This one will never agree it was his mistake; it will always be somebody else's mistake or problem for anything that went wrong. If pinned, this employee will be overdramatic and use an exaggerated show of emotion such as weeping, fighting, arguing with a loud voice, etc. You do not need this type of employee, either. In fact, the quicker you get him fired the better, for this type of attitude is addictive and highly contagious.

  4. The Conflict Maker - There are some employees who cannot get along with anyone. They start picking fights with everyone for the slightest and silliest things ever. They act like a 3 year old, and are continuously complaining about one or another person. They hog the limelight, take all the credit and in general make everyone around them upset and annoyed. This person seems to thrive on conflict. Fire this problem employee now, before they destroy the work culture in your office.

  5. Is Racist or Insensitive to Minorities - For a company/organization to grow and move forward, it should nurture an inner culture that respects and promotes equal and equitable rights for all. Any employee who is not sensitive enough to others just because of their gender, color, education, or status should not be allowed to remain in your organization.
