Company History: McKesson was founded by John McKesson and Charles Olcott in 1833 as Olcott & McKesson in New York City. They began the business as a wholesaler and importer of various botanical drugs. During the early 1900s the company made an important strategic decision of persuading various wholesaling companies to become their subsidiaries and form a national wholesaling organization. Since mid 20th century, the company has earned an increasing part of its earnings through medical technology instead of pharmaceuticals. During the 80s and 90s, the company focused more on heath care. It divested various unrelated businesses like Armor, McKesson Wine and Spirits, McKesson Chemical and Foremost Dairies.

This resulted into the purchase of HBOC, a medical information systems company in 1999. The new firm was called McKessonHBOC briefly. The name was changed back in 2001 to McKesson. The IT branch of the company, McKesson Technology Solutions, has managed to increase the market share through the years with acquisitions like Practice Partners, RelayHealth and Per Se Technologies. The company acquired the US Oncology, Inc., a well known cancer services firm, for $2.16 billion in 2010. The company was integrated into the Specialty Care Solutions division of the business.
