Self Improvement: Office Romance

By   |  Dated: 02-08-2012

February is a month for love, romance, flowers, candy, and rose petals. Have you ever thought of what it would be like to have the world of romance and the daily grind of the workplace come together as one? It can become possible with an office romance. Romance breeds in the strangest of places and the most stressful of work situations. You may be wondering if it is a good idea or not to mix business with pleasure. Here I will give you some advice on the office tryst.

1. Tread carefully. So you have found the object of your affection at the office and you don't know how to approach him or her. Feel a person out first to see if they are picking up on your clues. Be careful though – sexual harassment can take on many forms and it's not something you want to be accused of. Be careful what you say and always be subtle in your approach. Strike up a conversation in the lunch room or ask the person you are interested in to go to lunch out of the office. Getting away from business as usual can be fun and gives you a chance to see what the person is like out of the office environment.

2. Favorable response. If the response to your invitation was positive and they accepted your lunch invitation then asking them out for drinks at another time is always nice. If they do not drink, ask them to a movie or sporting event instead.

3. Keep it cool. If you do get involved with someone at the office be sure to keep things quiet. There is nothing worse than office gossip. The only two people that need to know about your dates are you and the person you are seeing. Gossip can spread like wildfire.

4. You never know. You never know where something will lead – good or bad. It is somewhat of a toss up as to whether to ask someone in the office out or not, and the decision is up to you. If you hit it off with a person and feel strongly about the situation then it is worth pursing. Sometimes the best dates and marriages come from those couples who first met at work.

Things can go positively or negatively in workplace love. Keeping an open mind is one of the best ways to approach romantic communications and ensure happiness for both people involved in a relationship. Can you imagine if no one ever expressed a romantic interest in others? The world would be a pretty sad place if this was the case. Get out there, take a chance, and express your affections to the one you care about, but do it with caution. You might be surprised at how well things go.
