The company was established by Dr. Homer Stryker, who invented his own tools for his orthopedic practice when he discovered that many of the available medical products were insufficient. In 1941, he established the Orthopedic Frame Company to meet the growing demand for his products. In 1964, the company took on its current name, Stryker. It went international eight years later.

Today, Stryker has more than 55,000 product offerings that are sold in 89 countries around the world. The company produces products in the categories of orthopedics; craniomaxillofacial; endoscopy; surgical instruments; orthobiologics; neurovascular intervention; spine; trauma; OR equipment and connectivity; patient handling, EMS, and evacuation equipment; surgical navigation software; and sustainability solutions.




The company also offers a range of medical education support programs for both medical professionals and patients. CME accredited courses are also available.

Stryker has 14 division headquarters and operates through several business divisions, including the Canadian endoscopy division; instruments, medical, orthopedics, and spine divisions. The Canada division is based in Ontario, while the endoscopy division has locations in San Jose, California; Dallas, Texas; and Arroyo, Puerto Rico. The company's instrument business has operations in Kalamazoo, Michigan; Dallas, Texas; Arroyo, Puerto Rico; Cork, Ireland; and Freiburg, Germany and the medical business has stations in Kalamazoo, Michigan and L'Islet, Quebec, Canada. The orthopedics division has production facilities in Cork, Ireland; Limerick, Ireland; Herouville Saint Clair, France; and Mahwah, New Jersey, while the Allendale, New Jersey-based spine division has locations in Cestas, France and Neuchatel, Switzerland.
