PACCAR”S companies include DAF, Leyland Trucks, Kenworth, Kenworth Mexico, Peterbilt, DAF Parts, PACCAR Australia, PACCAR Engines, Dynacraft, and PACCAR Winch Division. The company's service companies operate under the names of PACCAR Financial, PACCAR International, PACCAR Lease, and PACCAR Purchasing.
DAF Trucks are produced in the Netherlands, Belgium, and the United Kingdom and are sold throughout Western Europe, Eastern Europe, Asia, Africa, and North America. The Kenworth Truck Company constructs top of the line commercial vehicles, which are sold primarily in the US, Canada, Mexico, and Australia. PACCAR was established in 1905 as the Seattle Car Mfg. Co, which manufactured railroad and logging equipment. The company was founded by William Pigott Sr., who sold his control of the company to American Car and Foundry Company in 1924. Prior to the sale, the company merged with the Twohy Brothers of Portland and was renamed the Pacific Car and Foundry Company.
In 1934, Pigott's son, Paul Pigott, gained a major interest in the Pacific Car and Foundry Company. When the US became involved in the War in 1941, the company became involved in the manufacture of Sherman Tanks and tank recovery vehicles for the war effort. In 1945, the company purchased the Kenworth Motor Truck Company of Seattle and in 1958 it obtained both the Peterbilt Motors Company and the Dart Truck Company.
In 1972, the company officially changed its name to PACCAR Inc. and the Pacific Car and Foundry Company became a subsidiary. In 1981, PACCAR Inc. obtained the United Kingdom's Folden Trucks. 1996 brought the acquisition of the Netherlands-based DAF Trucks and two years later the company acquired the United Kingdom-based Leyland Trucks.
