Senior Director - Quality and Patient Safety

JOB SUMMARY

The Senior Director of Clinical Advancement and patient safety assures that the Quality and Patient Safety corporate functions are carried out on a local level in such a manner as to appropriately support Community Hospitals and system standardization. Serves as a member of the hospital's leadership team, participating in the establishment of hospital- and organization-wide goals and objectives, collaborates with CQO and VP of CAPS regarding strategic and quality plans for achieving those goals and objectives.   

Responsible for conducting recruitment, hiring, orientation, coaching and disciplinary action in accordance with **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW*** policies.  Is a good steward of fiscal plan.  Participates in fiscal planning, monitoring, and implementation of cost-containment measures as indicated and appropriate.   Assures good communication and coordination of those services with other services in the hospital service area. Champions and leads hospital-based Performance Improvement, Quality and Safety initiatives with board members, administrators, employees and medical staff members.  Ensures that data collection and reporting supports hospital and organization-wide quality monitoring efforts.Supports evidence base practice, Magnet and NDNQI processes 

Oversight of the Carilion Medical Center quality, patient safety, and accreditation programs, daily operations of the Clinical Advancement and Patient Safety Department, and promotion of a culture of safety and modeling of high reliability concepts and performance excellence.

*Provides administrative support to all Carilion CAPS teams to assure achievement of organizational quality and patient safety goals. Aligns departmental work with strategic goals. *Analyzes and facilitates optimal allocation of CAPS resources in support of individual facility or system-level initiatives. *Participates in national, regional and local Quality and Safety initiatives. Collaborates with the operational VP of CAPS to develop and achieve operational goals, plans and fiscal management *Champions and advocates for the system-level strategic plan in all forums and with board members, administrators, medical staff members and employees. *Ensures that data collection, analysis and reporting supports hospital and organization-wide quality monitoring efforts. *Maintains active participation with the Virginia Patient Safety Organization ensuring compliance with all requirements of our Patient Safety Evaluation System. *Oversight of the safety event reporting system and processes including Root Cause Analyses and Intensive Analyses. *Oversight of the programmatic approach to quality and patient safety outcomes which includes but is not limited to all CMS programs, Leapfrog, US News and World Report and Anthem Quality Health Insights Program (Q-HIP)  

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Requires Master's degree.  Certification in Quality/Safety strongly recommended.

Experience: Minimum 5-7 years management/leadership experience in hospital, operational or other health services setting, demonstrating increased and/or diversified responsibility for related services. Clinical experience a plus.

Licensure/ Certification: None required.  Clinical experience a plus.

Other Minimum Qualifications: Advanced leadership, planning and organizational skills to direct the successful completion of initiatives and achievement of fiscal goals. Demonstrated interpersonal and communication abilities to support and promote a respectful, inclusive culture of service excellence. Proven skills in clinical, operational and human resource management, including staffing, planning, performance management, teamwork and process improvement. Statistical analysis and fiscal management skills. Must satisfactorily complete orientation processes for **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW*** and for Director, Quality and Patient Safety position.  Must display positive leadership skills, interpersonal & oral communication skills, and written communication skills.  Must work well with all members of the Community hospital teams, including employees, managers, administrators and physicians.  Must understand dynamics of and be able to work effectively within a "matrix" management environment.  Must possess analytic business skills, integrity as a team player; be courteous; have ability to resolve complaints/problems; and display a customer-focused philosophy of service.  Must demonstrate skills in operational and human resources management.
