Position: Paralegal – Wirraway (Police & Prison Accountability)

Salary: $72,329.06 – $74,802.38 plus 11% Superannuation

Location: 273 High Street Preston, Vic, 3072

Hours: Part-time (18 hours per week) Fixed Term (2 years)

The Wirraway Police and Prison Accountability Practice represents people who have been have been abused and/or mistreated by members of Victoria Police, Corrections Victoria, Youth Justice or other government agencies. This also includes representing families in coronial inquests into Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander deaths in custody and police contact deaths. The Wirraway Practice is also engaged in strategic litigation relating to police and prison accountability.

The Paralegal will conduct intake and provide administrative, legal research and drafting support to lawyers in the Wirraway practice.

Key Responsibilities

Conduct initial intake for people seeking legal assistance, primarily over the phone but also from time to time in person at the VALS Preston office. This would include but it not limited to arranging conference calls with prisoners to conduct intake and take instructions.
Taking thorough and concise intake notes for legal enquiries, as well as recording mandatory client data for reporting purposes.
Manage large daily volumes of client data and intake material within VALS’ client database, to ensure follow up tasks related to intake and processing are being effectively managed.
Manage and collaborate with volunteers, by allocating tasks and work throughout the day that will best enable them to support the work of the paralegal.
Make timely, appropriate and effective referrals for individuals the VALS team is unable to assist, including to external organisations as well as within VALS, for both legal and non-legal matters.
Actively participate in weekly case planning meetings, including assist the team to determine the status of current matters, the possible assistance for future clients, options for referrals and to take minutes throughout the meeting.
Manage Wirraway’s and solicitors’ calendar to ensure deadlines are met.
Participate in community legal education projects, law reform and other VALS projects as required.
Contribute to the collaborative relationship between Victoria Legal Aid and other community organisations to support warm referrals to other legal professionals where VALS cannot assist the client.
As directed, undertake other duties which are incidental and peripheral to the main tasks, provided that such duties are reasonably within the employee’s skills, competence and training.

Key Selection Criteria

Essential

A commitment to understanding VALS and the social, legal and justice issues faced by Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people in Victoria.
Highly developed interpersonal skills with an ability to develop empathetic and productive relationships with clients, as well as internal and external stakeholders including members of Aboriginal communities, Courts, Judiciary, support services and Government Departments.
Good organisational skills and experience in managing competing demands on time.
Ability and willingness to undertake travel in Victoria.

Desired

Experience of working with clients in community organisations.
Experience of work within Aboriginal legal services, Victorian Legal Aid and/or community legal centres.
Experience in legal policy development and commitment to driving and influencing change on relevant policy priorities and emerging issues.
