## Job Overview

Merchant & Gould P.C. is seeking an Intellectual Property Paralegal to join our Intellectual Property law firm. The position may be located in one of our six offices – Minneapolis, Denver, Knoxville, Atlanta, New York, or Alexandria, VA. The successful candidate will be responsible for assisting in the preparation and filing of design patent and utility patent applications in the United States.

## Responsibilities

* Establish and maintain patent files, including the preparation of formal documents for filing, such as abstracts, drawings, and preliminary amendments
* Establish and maintain trademark files, including the preparation of formal documents for filing, maintenance, or renewals, such as specimens and declarations
* Review incoming correspondence from foreign associates for essential docketing and for non-substantive responses due in connection with filing of applications
* Maintain and update docket with respect to new filings
* Maintain a docket of due dates for patent applications and renewal of trademark registrations and be responsible for monitoring, resolving, and clearing those dates
* Assist in the on-going procedural aspects of prosecution
* Prepare estimates of filing and prosecution costs
* Work as a team member with other Prosecution Legal Specialists to establish back-up and workflow and have joint responsibility for establishing quality control measures

## Job Requirements

* BA degree and paralegal certificate or equivalent experience with some relevant work experience or a minimum of 3 years on-the-job experience with U.S. trademark prosecution filing
* Ability to work independently and meet critical deadlines under supervision of attorney
* Ability to organize and prioritize numerous tasks and complete them under time constraints
* Ability to concentrate on detailed work for up to 80% of worktime
* Ability to use advanced computer software (after training) and use effectively use and maintain a computer data base
* Interpersonal skills necessary in order to communicate and follow instructions from a diverse group, including clients (usually in writing), attorneys, and others, and to provide information with ordinary courtesy and tact
* High level of responsibility, dedication, and accuracy required
