Staff Attorney - Full Time - Southern Maryland - Hughesville, MD

Job Summary

The staff attorney will handle all aspects of casework, from initial intake through representation in court. This may include collaborating with other attorneys, law graduates, law clerks, and legal assistants. They may also be responsible for community outreach and education, as well as maintaining case files in accordance with MLA standards.

Duties and Responsibilities

- Screen clients for eligibility and make referrals as needed.
- Conduct preliminary and subsequent interviews with clients.
- Conduct factual investigation and legal research.
- Advise clients of results and counsel them on their options.
- Draft pleadings, memoranda of law, and briefs.
- Develop case theory and strategy.
- Represent clients in negotiations, hearings, trials, appeals, and administrative proceedings.
- Attend trainings and other programs for professional development.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

- Juris Doctorate (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school.
- Admitted to practice in the State of Maryland or eligible for admission.
- Knowledge of civil law, judicial procedures, and evidence.
- Proficiency in computer programs such as Office 365.
- Strong research, writing, and communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Willingness to provide quality legal advocacy for a diverse client base.
- Ability to travel locally and regionally as needed.

Work Environment

The staff attorney will primarily work in a general office setting, with some duties performed in community settings. They may also interact with clients via telephone, video conference, and email, as well as in-person and in a courtroom.
