Maryland Legal Aid (MLA) is a non-profit organization that has been providing life-changing civil legal assistance to eligible residents in every part of the state since 1911. With a team of over 100 attorneys, MLA strives to level the legal playing field for low-income and marginalized individuals and communities, helping them overcome challenges and achieve stability and independence.

MLA is currently seeking a Staff Attorney for their Tenants’ Right to Counsel Project (TRCP) in their Southern Maryland office. This is a full-time position for admitted attorneys or recent bar-exam takers who are passionate about public interest law and social justice. TRCP's mission is to ensure legal representation for all Marylanders facing eviction or forced displacement, and since its inception in October 2022, it has already represented over 1,600 households.

As the economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic continues to disproportionately impact the communities MLA serves, their legal services are more critical than ever in preventing evictions, fighting unfair rental practices, and preserving affordable housing. The staff attorneys at TRCP work directly with renters in court and through grassroots outreach, as well as engage in policy work and professional development opportunities. This position offers both new and experienced attorneys a chance to gain valuable legal skills in a fast-paced and compassionate work environment.

Key Responsibilities:

- Handle a full caseload of eviction cases, including routine trial practice, negotiations, and occasional discovery and depositions.
- Advocate before administrative agencies on behalf of clients.
- Participate in client intake and maintain case records.
- Continue professional development through trainings and other programs.
- Assist with broader advocacy efforts, including policy work, media engagement, and public speaking.

Qualifications:

- Admitted to practice in the State of Maryland or eligible for admission.
- Juris Doctorate (J.D.) degree from an ABA-accredited law school.
- Knowledge of civil law, judicial procedures, and rules of evidence.
- Excellent computer skills and proficiency in Microsoft Office.
- Strong research, critical thinking, writing, and communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Willingness to travel locally and regionally in Maryland.
- Prior experience and/or interest in public-interest litigation or non-profit legal services is a plus.
- Spanish language proficiency is desirable.

Benefits:

- Competitive salary based on experience and annual salary scale.
- Comprehensive benefits package including health, dental, vision, life insurance, and a 401(k) plan with employer contributions.
- Generous paid time off, sick leave, and 14 annual paid holidays.
- Standard 35-hour work week with the possibility for some remote work days.

Additional Requirements:

- Interested applicants must submit a resume, legal writing sample, and cover letter with their online application.
- References will be required at the final interview stage.
- No phone calls, please.
