Job Description:

The position of Assistant Public Defender II & III requires exceptional trial skills, innovative thinking, investigative skills, and the ability to work independently in managing an active felony caseload. Attorneys work in a team-oriented environment with social workers and core staff. The role involves balancing a client-centered approach with advocacy to address systemic inequities and collateral consequences that lead to further involvement in the criminal justice system.

Position Duties:

- Represent clients in all stages of their criminal case, including bail hearings, motions hearings, trials, and appeals.
- Ensure clients are consistently heard and respected.
- Conduct legal research and analysis to prepare for trial and anticipate legal problems.
- Draft and prepare legal documents for clients.
- Communicate effectively with clients, team members, and other stakeholders.
- Negotiate with prosecutors, judges, and other parties for favorable outcomes for clients.
- Provide post-representation follow-up with clients.
- Manage a full caseload independently and efficiently.
- Seek professional and personal development through training and continuing legal education.
- Other duties as assigned by the Public Defender.

Qualifications:

- Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited law school.
- Admitted to practice law in the State of Maryland.
- Experience as a practicing Attorney.
- Demonstrated commitment to serving marginalized communities.
- Excellent research, writing, and oral advocacy skills.
- Dedication to upending systemic racism, prejudice, and unfairness in the criminal justice system.
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
- Exceptional organizational and administrative skills.
- Criminal trial experience required, with felony jury trial experience preferred.
- Active membership in good standing in the Maryland Bar or Bar of another state.

Salary and Benefits:

The salary range for this position is $93,424.00 - $135,450.00/year, dependent on experience. State of Maryland employees may be eligible for a lateral transfer. Please visit the State of Maryland Employee’s page for more information on benefits.
