Staff Attorney - Appeals
Plattsburgh, NY Staff Attorney - Appeals: Represent clients in direct appeals and provide high-quality legal assistance to low-income individuals in rural New York counties. About Rural Law Center of New York: - Non-profit agency founded in 1996 - Main office located in Plattsburgh, NY - Primary provider of legal services to low-income individuals in all 44 of New York state's rural counties - Promotes equal justice under the law - Visit **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***for more information Responsibilities: - Represent clients on direct appeal in the Appellate Division - Case conferencing and strategy development - Client communication and legal visits - Brief drafting - Oral argument - Leave applications - Advise clients on potential appellate options, including withdrawal of guilty pleas and negotiating pleas or other remedies following reversal of convictions - Assist with intake evaluation of cases - Manage cases and deadlines with case management system Qualifications: - J.D. degree, with preferably three years of relevant appellate litigation experience - Admission to the New York Bar, or ability to secure immediate admission pursuant to 22 NYCRR ยง 520.10 - Outstanding legal research, writing, and oral advocacy skills - Ability to manage case files with complex legal issues - Trial court experience, particularly in post-conviction proceedings, is a plus - Demonstrated commitment to representing indigent individuals and understanding racial and economic issues in criminal justice - Strong belief in communication and respect for all people - Ability to work collaboratively and independently Salary: Commensurate with experience.
