Nonprofit Staff Attorney - Join a Team of Legal Experts in Boston Organization: Community Action Program Legal Services, Inc. (CAPLAW) Job Title: Staff Attorney Experience: J.D. and license to practice law in at least one U.S. state Salary: Competitive salary based on experience About the Organization: - Mission to eliminate poverty by strengthening the legal and management capacity of community organizations - National legal expert for the Community Action network - Provides guidance to federal, state, and national partners on legal and financial issues affecting Community Action Agencies (CAAs) - Equips approximately 1,000 CAAs across the country with knowledge and tools to operate effectively - Vision of a dynamic national network of community organizations empowering individuals to overcome poverty About Community Action Agencies: - Over 50 years of working to strengthen communities and help individuals and families with low incomes achieve economic security - Approximately 1,000 nonprofit and public CAAs funded under the Community Services Block Grant (CSBG) Act - Provide various services such as job training, education programs, Head Start, energy assistance, housing, and more The Role: - Seeking an attorney with a strong commitment to public service and a passion for advising, training, and equipping leaders of community-based, nonprofit, and public organizations across the country - Will join a small team of attorneys handling individual legal consultations from CAAs, developing and publishing resources, and presenting trainings for the Community Action network - Must be intellectually curious, have an entrepreneurial spirit, and be able to pivot quickly between projects Responsibilities: - Advise CAAs and other stakeholders in the Community Action network on legal and financial matters that impact their day-to-day operations - Stay updated on new and current legal requirements by researching, writing, and editing legal publications - Prepare and present training seminars on legal issues for staff and board members of Community Action organizations - Advocate on policy priorities affecting the Community Action network - Stay informed on relevant federal and state laws that may impact CAAs - Other related duties as required Qualifications: - J.D. and license to practice law in at least one U.S. state - Experience in corporate law and governance, nonprofit management, employment law, administrative law, federal grant management, and/or tax-exempt organization law preferred - Demonstrated commitment to public service and the mission of Community Action - Ability to work independently and as part of a small team - Excellent legal research, writing, and presentation skills - Strong interpersonal skills and professional judgment - Exceptional work ethic and attention to detail Work Environment: - Primarily remote position, but must live in Massachusetts - All staff currently work in person one day per week at CAPLAW’s office in downtown Boston - Periodic travel to out-of-state conferences required - Ability to work in front of a computer screen for extended periods of time - May need to lift and/or move materials and equipment (such as a portable projector for CAPLAW’s conference) Compensation and Benefits: - Competitive salary based on experience - Eligible for robust benefits package, including generous holiday and paid time off, reduced hours summer schedule, employer-subsidized health and dental insurance, employer-paid Life, Long- and Short-Term Disability Insurance, and generous employer 401(k) matching contribution - CAPLAW strives for diversity and inclusivity in the workplace and actively encourages individuals with diverse backgrounds and perspectives to apply How to Apply: - Submit a cover letter, resume, and writing sample - Applications will be considered on a rolling basis - In cover letter, explain interest in the position and how experience qualifies for the role. |
