Trial Attorney

Nationwide is hiring a Trial Attorney in Maryland with a full-time position and a salary range of $80,000-$120,000. The successful applicant should have prior insurance defense experience and be proficient in case management software and Microsoft products. This position does not have a billing requirement and will be provided with all necessary equipment. The Trial Attorney will be responsible for representing clients in both commercial and personal lines insurance policies, as well as handling cases as part of a larger team as needed. The caseload will consist of a mix of cases with varying levels of complexity and severity. The Nationwide Trial Division is a national team with approximately 40 offices throughout the United States, and the Trial Attorney will be expected to maintain a highly productive case volume while demonstrating a commitment to effective collaboration, embracing technology, and proactive case management.

Key Responsibilities:

- Independently demonstrate trial advocacy skills as lead counsel or as part of a team, with minimal oversight and guidance from the Managing Trial Attorney and NTD Leadership
- Utilize technology and work collaboratively with support staff to efficiently manage cases
- Stay up-to-date with changes in the law, technology, and other procedural requirements that may impact litigation strategies
- Possess and consistently perform with subject matter expertise and trial advocacy skills in property and casualty insurance defense or subrogation
- Provide consistent and timely case valuations and effectively communicate with clients and claims
- Establish and foster professional relationships within the Office of the Chief Legal Officer, claims, and the legal and insurance industries
- Communicate professionally and effectively in all formats and situations
- Dedicate time to development as a litigation attorney and NTD team member

Reporting Relationships: Managing Trial Attorney

Typical Skills and Experiences:

- Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school
- Active license in the state of Maryland
- More than three years of relevant civil litigation experience in property and casualty insurance defense or subrogation
- Moderate litigation experience in property and casualty insurance defense or subrogation
- Effective and professional written and verbal communication skills
- Highly collaborative and able to work with staff and other attorneys on-site and remotely
- Strong negotiation skills
- Ability to process information efficiently and effectively
- Excellent analytical and legal skills
- Resourceful and creative problem solver
- Familiar with basic software and able to adapt to changes in technology and the law
- Strong time management and organizational skills
- Ability to make decisions and prioritize work
- Familiar with legal research techniques
- Knowledge of ethical rules and policies

Working Conditions:

- Normal office environment, with the possibility of working from home
- Frequent travel, with occasional overnight travel
- Extended hours may be necessary to meet the demands of the profession
- Must have a valid driver's license with a satisfactory driving record in accordance with Nationwide standards

They will possess excellent communication and negotiation skills and be able to efficiently manage a caseload with varying levels of complexity.
