Maryland Legal Aid (MLA) is a nonprofit organization that provides civil legal assistance to low-income and marginalized individuals and communities. With a history dating back to 1911, MLA is dedicated to preserving the basic human needs and rights of its clients, particularly as they navigate the justice system. MLA relies on the support of staff, pro bono attorneys, community partners, and general supporters to ensure equal access to justice for those most in need.

MLA is currently seeking a full-time Staff Attorney for their Anne Arundel/Howard County office in Annapolis, MD. The selected candidate will primarily handle adult guardianship cases and assist clients with other administrative law and income security matters. This position requires attending required training, participating in outreach activities and clinics, and serving on various committees and workgroups. Duties may include representing clients in court and administrative proceedings, conducting investigations and legal research, drafting pleadings and memoranda, and developing case strategies.

Qualifications for this position include a Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited law school, a minimum of three years of Maryland-specific adult guardianship legal experience (or ten years of general litigation experience), and admission to practice in the State of Maryland. Knowledge of civil law, judicial procedures, and evidence rules is also required, as well as proficiency in computer and web-based applications. The ideal candidate will have excellent research, critical thinking, writing, and communication skills, be able to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment, and have a passion for advocating for a diverse, low-income client base.

The work environment for this position is typically in a general office setting, with some work possibly taking place in community settings. MLA has a hybrid workplace and encourages telework.
