Senior Counsel, Intellectual Property & Product Compliance

SENIOR COUNSEL - INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY & PRODUCT COMPLIANCE 

J. Crew seeks a talented attorney to join its legal team.  The successful candidate will be based in J. Crew's New York City headquarters and will assist with a variety of legal matters arising in a global retail environment, including those related intellectual property, product regulatory compliance, litigation, and transactional agreements.  This person will work closely with company leaders to develop and implement key intellectual property and product strategies.  The successful candidate will report to the General Counsel and operate independently and proactively in a fast-paced and growing environment. 

RESPONSIBILITIES 

*Shape and execute J. Crew's intellectual property strategy to align with company initiatives and business direction  *Oversee J. Crew's global intellectual property portfolio including the filing, maintenance and/or protection of J. Crew's trademarks, patents, copyrights, and trade secrets  *Supervise internal and external resources to conduct various design reviews, intellectual property searches, and clearances through a variety of databases  
*Manage outside counsel on intellectual property and product related disputes and litigation activities  *Advise on IP-related matters in connection with commercial and other transactions  *Provide counseling on trade secret and confidentiality-related matters  *Train and educate Design, Merchandising, and other teams on IP matters  *Provide advice related to product compliance, including but not limited to anti-trust, product safety, customer claims, labeling, and supply chain issues.  *Manage and work with outside counsel on a variety of matters including claims substantiation, risk assessment, and regulatory updates.  *Negotiate, draft, and review contracts including those related to consulting services, product and content creation, talent and media campaigns, supply chain and sustainability initiatives, partnerships, and licensing arrangements.  *Support the general legal needs of the Design, Merchandising, Brand Creative, Marketing, and Customer Support teams as a trusted advisor.  *Help develop and implement new processes, policies and training as needed, based on legal and regulatory requirements, industry standards and best practices.  
*Work collaboratively with paralegals, in-house attorneys, and business clients  *Maintain flexibility and readiness to take on other duties as assigned  

QUALIFICATIONS 

*J.D. degree from an A.B.A. accredited law school. Admitted and member in good standing with the New York Bar (or ability to waive in to become a member).  *Minimum 9 years of relevant legal experience.  *Well-developed analytical and critical thinking skills; high attention to detail.  *Excellent judgment and the highest level of personal integrity.  *Excellent written and verbal communication skills.  *Able to balance multiple projects while remaining highly organized.  *Deadline driven and able to work effectively under pressure.  *Creative problem solver able to deliver clear, strategic advice to clients in a timely manner.  *Self-starter who is resourceful and able to work effectively both independently, as well as with teams.  *Proficient with technology, including with Microsoft Office Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and other systems  *Ability to work full-time
