ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Lead all aspects of the BMT program including education, research, and clinical programming. The Adult BMT Director will report to the Head of the Division of Hematology and Oncology. Anticipated institutional collaborative efforts for managing the BMT program will include efforts with the CCH, Hoxworth Blood Center, Hematology & Oncology Division Medical Director, Leukemia Destination Program Center of Excellence Director/co-director, Associate and Senior Vice President for Oncology Services, as well as members of the COM and UC Health leadership team, to design and execute strategic initiatives. The BMT Director will serve as the Program Director for hematopoietic cellular therapy in accordance with FACT-JACIE Standards. The BMT Director may delegate specific duties to other faculty leaders in support of the BMT program. It is anticipated the position will be made up of the following components: administrative (50%) with proportion of clinical, education and research determined by peer review funding and candidates goals. In addition, it is anticipated that this individual will be able to appoint an associate director with 20% effort when the program expands sufficiently to support this need. It is anticipated that this would occur by 2023. CLINICAL OPERATIONS: Per FACT-JACIE Standards for Hematopoietic Cellular Therapy: The BMT Director will provide leadership for: *Administrative and clinical operations, including serving as Medical Director and to maintain compliance with FACT standards and other regulations and policies. *Active management of the clinical program, including quality management, selection and care of recipients and donors, and cell collection and processing. Focus on achieving and maintaining national quality measures is a major focus as well as assuring Center of Excellence status with external payers. *Oversight of the medical care provided by members of the clinical program, including verification of the knowledge and skills of members. Serving as the final decision maker (should this be necessary) on proceeding or not proceeding with a transplant or cell therapy intervention at UCH. STRATEGY AND GROWTH: *Community outreach and referral building to increase impact of the allogeneic, cellular therapy, and autologous transplants done at UCH in collaboration with referring physicians. *Internal collaboration with the leukemia destination program of excellence and other faculty in hematology oncology to increase impact of allogeneic transplant, autologous transplant, and cellular therapy done at UCH in collaboration with other UC faculty members. *Working with the CCC, UCH, COM, DOM, Hematology-Oncology and leukemia destination program of excellence leadership to effectively build a free standing inpatient, outpatient, and inpatient-outpatient unit(IPOP unit) within the old Shriner hospital that provides highly impactful and empathetic care to patients receiving therapy for hematologic malignancies and transplantation *Initiation of broad efforts to become FACT accredited for allogeneic stem cell transplant by modernizing SOPs, methods, and supportive components with goal of attaining this status by 2023. *Initiate broad efforts to collaborate with UC, CCH along with other outside academic and industry collaborators to build internal programs of cellular therapy (NK, T-cell, other) that increase the competitiveness of our care and marketplace within Cincinnati RESEARCH: The BMT Director will work with the BMT, cellular therapy team, hematology-oncology faculty, along with members of the clinical research management team of the CCC, to ensure a broad portfolio of research, including translational research studies and clinical trials. Clinical trials will include institutional investigator initiated studies, as well as those sponsored by pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies. The director will ensure active participation in the BMT cooperative group trials and seek partnership with another institution (s) for participation in the Clinical Trials Network and other cooperative groups. Ongoing commitment to maintaining institutional data base and registry will assure ongoing clinical research efforts. *SWOG/ NCTN, Alliance (if approved for membership) OPERATIONS AND FINANCE: The BMT Director will work with the Hospital Transplant Manager, with the Hematology & Oncology Division and Cancer Center to develop and execute strategies for focused program areas of excellence and growth and to allocate program-specific resources, including: *Faculty recruitment and team expansion *CCC and UCH strategic planning *Marketing and community outreach *CIBMTR registry EDUCATION AND FACULTY DEVELOPMENT: The BMT Director will work with other senior BMT team members, to maintain a structure for orientation and continuing education for all program members, including faculty physicians and APPS, fellows and residents, nursing, and pharmacy. The BMT Director will meet with individual faculty to monitor and support their professional development and advancement. The BMT director will actively recruit faculty to develop the clinical and research programs and will engage in faculty building, retention and development opportunities. *Annual faculty reviews with division director of hematology-oncology for relevant faculty members *APP leadership meetings *Internal and external educational conferences *Assure FACT annual educational targets are met *Accountability for assessing Adult BMT program success and to establish prospective Adult BMT program targets will be assessed annually with Hematology & Oncology Division, UCH system hospital and CCC leaderships. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Prior to effective date of appointment, candidate must have an MD or MD/PhD degree; be Board Certified in hematology and oncology, medical oncology or hematology, as defined by ACGME, completed 3-year Internal Medicine residency and completed 2-year hematology and oncology, medical oncology or hematology fellowship training and, have a current OH medical license.
