General Description of Position:
The full-time lab technician will be responsible for managing the day to day operations of the flex lab and will provide instructional support services for multidisciplinary classes in the School of Advanced Manufacturing, Engineering, and Applied Science. The technician will be responsible for maintaining a safe and clean work environment and will also assist the students with lab-activities to strengthen skills.
Major Responsibilities:
All duties herein will be performed in in the Valparaiso Flex Lab, as well as the Michigan City site, LaPorte site, and the Mobile Training Unit as needed or requested by the supervisor. This includes travel to those sites when needed.
Perform complete inventory list of all equipment at all locations. Implement a ‘check out” procedure and be point person for all equipment transfers. Ensure all capital equipment is tagged appropriately.
Organize, label, and maintain all tools in lab office, tool carts, cabinets, and upper loft area.
Be proactive for class labs, perform equipment setups required for class work and laboratory sessions to ensure students & faculty have all tools needed.
Ensure student safety through consistent student & faculty communication. Create and implement a set of lab rules, and help enforce them, to prevent any undesired unsafe occurrences.
Provide strong customer service for students and external equipment vendors. Provide quotes for tools/equipment from vendors as necessary.
When equipment is no longer used, communicate to all parties effectively, and either transfer or recycle unwanted equipment in a timely manner.
Collaborate with I.T. to install and update training software on electronic equipment as needed. Keep records of upcoming expiration dates.
Troubleshoot and repair inoperative training hardware if capable. When required, retrofit training hardware as per the manufacturer's specifications. Collaborate with manufacturer to fix equipment if necessary.
Maintain safety signage (i.e. PPE, fire extinguishers, stripping, e-stops, fire exits etc.).
Light cleaning of Flex Lab area includes:
- Daily sweeping
- Weekly dusting of equipment
- Keep floors clean of spills by wiping/degreasing
Minimum Qualifications:
Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree in electrical/mechanical maintenance and/or any combination of equivalent work experience required.
Strong computer skills in MS Word, Excel and Outlook required.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to travel between different campus sites as needed.

Work Hours:
Typically daytime hours Monday-Friday. Some evening and weekend hours as needed for special events, projects, or Saturday classes.
