Job Description:

As Technologist Base Chemicals you will support Shell Chemicals’ growth targets and help transforming our technology become more profitable and sustainable in line with energy transition ambitions.

It needs to be emphasized that Chemicals play a critical role in delivering Shell’s sustainability program as we meet customer demand for durable goods that both enhance our lives and support the environment through e.g. lighter weight materials, improved insulation, food preservation, etc. whilst converting our petrochemical industry to align towards an increased renewable feed, an increased plastic waste circularity and deployed carbon solutions to avoid and reduce CO2 to zero emissions from own operations business.

Where you fit in -

The selected Technologist will become part of the Base Chemicals function within the central Projects and Technology organization, which is a team of about 40 staff members globally spread. The team provides support to our Base Chemicals assets at manufacturing sites and business, commercial organizations. The Base Chemicals team has its own R&D facilities to support plant and margin improvements ahead of our competition, strengthens Shell corporate knowledge to support the business and strategy. The team drives the innovation agenda via interactive / natural teams.

What’s the role -

Your role is to know what the site needs and be able to provide the high quality of service that meets Shell’s commercial goals. This specific role is targeted for base chemicals with a strong focus on the selective hydrogenation of C4’s, C5’s and aromatics and extraction technologies for butadiene and benzene, toluene, xylene aromatics. These technologies support delivering Shell Chemicals’ sustainability goals and will become even more relevant as can play a role preparing cracker feed and recycled cracker output. This includes operational troubleshooting and investigation, long term pro-active technical monitoring, optimization tactics support in global sites and projects in Base Chemicals. Those projects include brownfield projects to improve safety, reliability, capacity or energy efficiency, as well as greenfield NBD projects.

Skills and Requirements

What we need from you -

A legal authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer.
Must have bachelor’s degree. Master or PhD degree in Chemical Engineering or equivalent
At least five (5) years’ experience in Steam Cracker associated units (Butadiene extraction, Pygas Hydrogenation, Aromatic extraction), new technology development, plant optimization or plant operations. Preferable a part of that experience should have been obtained during a manufacturing assignment.
Site chemicals unit turnaround experience is preferred
Project Front End Engineering and Design experience is preferred
Proven experience in Process Modelling of process units
Fluency in the English language is a must
Highly motivated with a drive to deliver results
Flexible approach towards collaboration and natural curiosity in exploring new more efficient ways of working
Committed to develop and implement new sustainability improvements
Successful candidate demonstrates a passion in sharing of knowledge, developing or improving tools and knowledge repository as well as in coaching and training of new staff with an inclusive approach and an open, learner mindset
