San Francisco, CA 89335BR Job Title: Director of Data Science, Energy Platform - San Francisco, CA No. of Positions: 1 Job Description: The Director of Data Science will lead all data science and data engineering activities for the Energy Platform. This senior leader will build, oversee, develop, and optimize a growing function made up of dedicated data scientists and data engineers as well as potentially matrixed teams from central Shell functions and portfolio companies. Responsibilities include: Build and nurture a high-performing team Team – build, oversee, and nurture the Energy Platform data science function Culture – develop and nurture an empathetic team culture based on respect, collaboration, equal opportunity, and recognition of strong contributions Collaboration – Work closely and align principles, tools and techniques with Shell strategy, product management, software engineering, enterprise architecture, solution delivery, and commercial teams across Shell Recruiting – proactively recruit exceptional talent, maintaining a rich pipeline of talent to quickly bring onto the team Professional development – proactively motivate, develop and retain talent, maintaining a deep talent bench and developing team capabilities needed to succeed Process – Nurture embrace of best practices in data science ecosystem development, data science techniques, product management, product development, software engineering, and user support to deliver outstanding capabilities, agility, and velocity Lead data engineering design, delivery and maintenance efforts Serve as technical subject matter expert and best practice evangelist on data engineering principles, techniques, tools, and processes Work closely with enterprise architecture team, Shell IT, customers, and external vendors to design data models, systems, tools, processing, messaging, and other infrastructure that underpin the Energy Platform data flows Inform design / selection of data flow administration tools, track key performance indicators, and support infrastructure maintenance Lead data science ecosystem development that accelerates development by third-party data scientists and developers Serve as architect for designing capabilities that accelerate development speed, value creation, accuracy, and reusability for third-party developers Drive flexible micro-service architecture that leverages best-in-class techniques, libraries, engines and services from third party vendors Observe patterns in third-party application development on the Energy Platform to abstract common components into common platform capabilities, libraries, features, etc. Drive third-party data science / developer user experience principles, design, success criteria, and user feedback / satisfaction measurement approach Lead data science application development efforts for internally-developed applications Serve as technical subject matter expert and best practice evangelist on data science principles, techniques, tools, and processes Lead internal development of high priority / foundational data science applications (e.g. load / price forecasting, optimal asset sizing, dispatch optimization, wholesale energy market bidding optimizations, etc.) for Shell teams and external customers Proactively source application ideas from across Shell, customers, and external parties that inform product incubation and discovery backlogs Support third-party data scientist / developer network development and engagement Support recruitment, education, and engagement of third party developer network Proactively seek feedback from third party developer network to inform roadmap Support development of user support tools and resources Support and heavily engage in product management, software engineering, solution delivery, and platform operations functions Serve as steward of data science and engineering principles, capabilities, and value addition during team’s development of product strategies, roadmaps, and requirements Inform and engage in overall platform architecture and software development efforts Support solution delivery efforts to deploy the Energy Platform according to commercial terms and commercial opportunity theses Support platform operations, maintenance, troubleshooting and user support efforts Serve as senior leader on the Energy Platform team Serve on the Leadership Team of the Shell Energy Platform team, providing expertise, support, and leadership across the team as appropriate Support Platform Team business planning and internal advocacy activities Auto req ID: 89335BR Country of Work Location: United States Company Description: Shell is a global group of energy and petrochemicals companies with over 90,000 employees in more than 70 countries and territories. Work Location: California - San Francisco Requirements: Must have legal authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer Bachelors degree in a technical discipline; Advanced technical degree strongly preferred (e.g. PhD in optimization theory, data science, operations research, systems engineering, computer science, electricity markets) 10 years of experience that informs data science and engineering capabilities in complex and innovative energy software solutions with a globally distributed user base Demonstrated leadership across data science, data engineering, product management, software development, and infrastructure maintenance efforts Demonstrated leadership in in theory and application of optimization routines, including linear programming, mixed integer linear programming, and stochastic optimization Demonstrated leadership in theory and application of machine learning and artificial intelligence routines, with preference to applications in the energy domain Demonstrated leadership in building strong stakeholder relationships and mitigating conflict Experience in energy management domain, with comfort in energy asset optimization, asset control and data flow loops, and wholesale electricity market applications Experience in cloud services architectures, with comfort scaling software systems to global coverage with millions of physical assets Experience in and commitment to building micro-service-oriented architectures with rich APIs Experience in and commitment to building container-based services Comfort across dual-track Agile, continuous integration, and test-driven development Experience building toolkits and platform infrastructure for third-party developers Expertise in python and commercial optimization solvers (e.g. Xpress, Gurobi, CPLEX) Expertise in wholesale electricity markets a strong plus City, State (if applicable): San Francisco, CA |
