Polymer Chemist, Packaging Coatings','JOBREQ1800002410','United States of America-Ohio-Milford-USA - Milford R&D Center','Industrial Ctgs Segment','Full-time','','Jan 7, 2019','!*!Located in Milford, Ohio and reporting to the Polymer Synthesis Lab Manager, the Packaging Coatings Polymer Chemist will be working on a cross-functional team consisting of other polymer chemists and formulators. This position is a “hands-on” polymer synthesis role that will support both existing product lines and new development projects.

The successful scientist in this role will learn the PPG Packaging Coating business and will need to have a good understanding of the current chemistries utilized. You will need to have a strong polymer background and be comfortable working with various chemicals in the laboratory. You will also manage multiple demands from the lab, carefully prioritize ideas and projects, and be comfortable working at the edge of the unknown. It’s a very exciting time to be a part of our evolving industry, which presents many opportunities to have a big impact. Travel in this role will be approximately 10% domestically.

Additional Responsibilities include:

Discovery:  Drive innovation by designing new or novel chemistry platforms that are currently unknown to the Packaging Industry
Development:  Modification to an existing product line for improved performance and/or reduced cost.
Production support:  Understand production process and protocols. Communicate with production engineers and visit production facility to launch new products and troubleshoot issues.
Analysis:  Work with raw material suppliers to evaluate alternative sources of raw materials for improved cost or stability of the supply chain; have a good grasp on how RM cost affect bottom line.
Communication: Build close working relationships with formulation chemist; carefully understand their needs by asking questions and engaging in intellectual discussions.
Required Qualifications

PhD in Polymer or Organic Chemistry
Or a Masters in Polymer or Organic Chemistry with at least two years of polymer synthesis experience, preferably within coatings or other closely related chemicals.

Strong problem solving abilities; passion to determine the true “root cause”
Excellent communication skills with the ability to work collaboratively and build relationships with cross-functional teams
Ability to manage multiple projects and competing demands simultaneously
