Top
Starting your search

Finding your dream job on Hound is simple. Follow the steps outlined below, for a quick search on the Hound homepage:

Step 1
In the box marked "Keywords," type in words that describe the kind of job you are looking for. For example, you might enter job titles or required skills.

Step 2
In the box marked "Location," enter the name of the state or city or the zip code in which you want to work.

Step 3
Hound also has a Premium User Feature where members can search jobs by the organization of their choice. In the box marked "Organization" enter name of the organization / employer for which you want to work.

Step 4
Click the button marked "Search" or press the "Enter" key on your keyboard.

Note:
  1. If you have entered two or more keywords, jobs containing ANY of the words specified by you will be displayed.
  2. By default, the jobs matching your keywords located within 25 miles of the location you have specified will be displayed. If you have changed the default value for "Distance" in your preference settings, the search engine will consider that.


Broadening Your Search
Start Hounding by using a broad job search. For example, if you enter "contract" and "recruiter" in your search, you will see jobs containing either or both of the words.

Narrowing Your Search
When confronted with a large number of choices, you can narrow your search to arrive at the exact job profile you wish to see. While browsing jobs, you can specify jobs by:

  1. Category, for example, Baker
  2. City, for example, Florence
  3. State, for example, Indianapolis or IN

You can also narrow your search using keywords such as your preferred job title and location such as city or postal code in the search boxes provided.

Abbreviations
You can also look up jobs that are better known by their abbreviated forms. This means you can enter "IT" for Information Technology.

Looking for exact phrases
To obtain results containing the exact phrase you are looking for, enclose the phrase in quotation marks in the box marked "Keywords". For example, you might type in "IT manager."

Case sensitivity/Capitalization
The search is not case dependent.
For example, you can type in "Health Care" or "health care" and get the same results.

Refining your search
To refine your search in the face of a large number of results:

Check if you have filled in the "Location" option. Filling in the zip code usually gives more focused results. Add a few more options in the "Keywords" box. Also, try excluding the words that are not of use. Type in the minus sign (-) before the term that is to be dropped. You can also enter the employers' name in the "Organization" box.

Searching by job title
To search for a particular job title (for example, "director"), enter your keywords in the following format: title:director.

To search for job titles containing two words, use parenthesis as shown here: title:(senior engineer).

Keeping track of previous searches
You can see all your last searches in the "My Searches" tab in "My Hound" section. This allows you to keep track of the searches you have already conducted and prevents you from having to begin the process all over again.

Complex Phrases
Use Boolean logic to revise your search. This means including terms such as OR, NOT, or AND.

  1. Entering Cook NOT Baker will give you job vacancies for Cook jobs while cutting out Baker openings.
  2. Use multiple options, such as (Therapist OR Assistant) NOT Manager to yield your specific job and position.

Advanced search option tips
Enter keywords into the fields on the advanced search page to find more specific results matching your search criteria. Advanced search options include:

  1. "With all of these words." This field allows you to search for job listings including all the keywords you have specified. For example, if you type in "legal attorney" Hound will search for all jobs with the keywords "legal", "attorney" and "legal attorney".

  2. "With the exact phrase." This field allows you to search for job listings including the exact phrase you have specified. For example, if you type in "legal attorney" Hound will search for job listings with the exact phrase "legal attorney".

  3. "With at least one of these words." This field allows you to search for jobs including at least one of the keywords you have specified. For example, if you type in "legal attorney" Hound will search for all job listings containing the keywords "legal", "attorney" and "legal attorney".

  4. "With none of these words." This field allows you to search for job listings without the keywords you have specified. For example, if you type in "legal attorney" Hound will search for all job listings without the phrase "legal attorney".

  5. "With these words in the title." This field allows you to search for jobs with specific titles that you have entered as keywords. For example, if you type in "attorney" Hound will search for all job listings with the title "attorney".

  6. "From this organization." This is a Premium User Feature. As a Hound member, you can search for jobs with a specific organization whose name you have entered as a keyword. For example, if you type in "dell" Hound will search for all job openings at Dell.
