2 Ways to Make Money as a Handmade Artist

Handmade artists put a lot of time and effort into their work. The passion is what keeps most of them working, since the pay is not great. There are two ways a handmade artist can increase their income.
  1. Hire someone to help create your items
If you love the process of designing your items, but lack the time needed to make enough to make a substantial income, having someone work with you may be a good option. Start with friends and family that are talented in creating your product. You may be shocked to find out how many friends and family are interested in making the product for little to no compensation. The time it takes to train someone now will pay off in the long-term. Keep track of how you train new employees so that if you need to hire someone again, the process will go faster than the first time. Work on creating patterns of your items to sell over and over again for little additional work in return.
  1. Become a teacher
Perhaps teaching others about your craft is more enjoyable to you than spending countless hours making the items. To offset the cost of making the items, teach on the side. Build an email list of those interested in learning more about your items. In your emails provide fun articles that will help subscribers learn about the craft such as “Top 10 Favorite Pottery Tools.” Keep up your email list with weekly updates including tips, patterns, and resources. Other items you can create to sell are eBooks, workbooks, a video course, and more to earn a little extra money.
