About LAUSD: LAUSD was at one time composed of two different districts. The LA High School District was formed in the year 1890 and the LA School District was formed in 1853. In July, 1961 Palos Verdes District and LA School District merged to form the LAUSD. The LA high school district at the time changed its name to West County Union District. The Topanga District was annexed in July, 1962.

Over the years LAUSD has attempted several program reforms. At one time schools had been authority over their everyday decisions. During the 1990s, LAAMP and LEARN were created to give more authority to the principals for making changes in the curriculum that would benefit the students.
