The chief risk officer is responsible for the governance of risks and opportunities relating to the given firm. The main purpose of this position is to ensure that the organization is in complete compliance with government regulations and guidelines. The CRO is also responsible for the development of risk analytics. Other responsibilities of the CRO include risk mitigation, internal auditing, corporate investigations, and information security matters. The CRO typically reports directly to the board of directors or the chairman.
Employers may prefer that applicants for this position have a JD, MBA, or CPA degree. The post is also sometimes referred to as chief risk management officer. Several years of experience as a risk analyst, business analyst, risk officer, director of risk management, or even credit officer may be required for certain CRO positions.
