About the Position

The department of Planning, Design & Construction (PDC), is a department within Facilities Development & Operations (FD&O). FD&O is responsible for the planning, development, construction, maintenance, and operation of all SJSU facilities. PDC is divided into three major segments, Planning Design and Construction.

Under general direction from the Senior Director of PDC, the Associate Director of Design exercises management responsibility over University architectural activities related to the fulfillment of **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW*** physical planning commitments. The Associate Director of Design also conducts and coordinates the planning, funding and design of new construction and the alteration of buildings and facilities.

Essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:

-Oversee preparation of plans, programs and systems for design of University facilities and utility interface requirements. Review and approve work of consultants and contractors for compliance with architectural and engineering practices, sustainability initiatives, financial effectiveness and University standards.

-Assist the Sr. Director of PDC in directing, supervising and administering the architectural aspects of the design of University facilities. Provide leadership to ensure decisions and actions are consistent with University policies, procedures, and guidelines.

-Must carry major responsibility for University building programs in relationships with design architects and University committees and staff members, representing the Sr. Director.

-Consult and work closely with Associate Director Planning and Associate Director of Construction in writing Service Agreements for the Capital Improvement Program.

-Represent the Sr. Director as necessary on departmental and campus committees, community boards and other work groups. Communicate and coordinate with the Chancellors Office CPDC as required for engineering, infrastructure, energy, and sustainability matters.

-Oversee design aspects of project development as managed by the Associate Director Construction Management.

-Work with Associate Director of Construction to prepare and recommend action on change orders during and after construction for architectural, structural, mechanical, and civil engineering coordination, and for financial authorization; participate in on-site inspections before final acceptance by the University of the project under construction; and assemble and evaluate information and prepare reports with respect to new and revised concepts of building design, utilization, funding, and construction, for possible University application.

-Monitor contractor operations for conformance to contract documents and applicable codes, review and negotiate contractor claims, to oversee the work of inspectors and testing agencies and to actively assist project team in the resolution of technical and procedural challenges.

-Apply corrective/disciplinary action up to and including recommendation of dismissal in consultation with Director and Human Resources.

-Prepare scope of work, schedule and plan of action for all minor projects

-Assist with on-going training programs for the project management staff.

-Prepare and/or review program documentation to determine compliance with University and funding and architectural requirements.

-Supervise the preparation of bidding documents and project budgets; supervise the design and/or detailing of furnishings, equipment and systems for projects; coordinate the services of commissioned architects and engineers, contractors, and inspectors in the solution of problems arising during construction.

This is a position in the CSU - Management Personnel Plan (MPP), and serves at the pleasure of the President. This position may also require adherence to University compliance training such as: Conflict of Interest and Ethics, AB 1825 Sexual Harassment Prevention, Information Security, and Injury and Illness Prevention Program. The person hired for this position will be required to complete an outside employment disclosure statement in accordance with Title V of the California Code of Regulations.
