The Bay Area Laboratory VP provides overall management and strategic direction for the activities and resources of the Clinical Laboratory Services for all entities within the Bay Area Hospitals and Medical Foundations. The Laboratory VP provides leadership and administrative oversight for planning, business growth, organizing, integrating, and staffing models for Clinical Laboratory Services (Chemistry, Hematology/Coagulation, Immunology, Transfusion Service, Microbiology, Pathology, Specimen Collection, etc.) in all laboratory facilities throughout the Bay Area. The Laboratory VP ensures optimal provision and coordination of laboratory services and resources across the Bay Area. The Laboratory VP ensures a high quality and responsive laboratory service, regulatory compliance, ongoing efficiency of operations, affordability and optimally standardized processes. The incumbent manages the development and implementation of profitable business growth throughout the Bay Area. The Laboratory VP collaborates and integrates activities with the Sutter Health Shared Laboratory Leadership, the Valley Area Laboratory Services and Sutter Health Strategic Sourcing, ensuring strategic and operational alignment, as well as optimal standardization of equipment, supplies and processes. The Laboratory VP ensures coordinated and harmonious working relationships within the acute care and ambulatory structures, including but not limited to other hospital departments, ambulatory care sites, Laboratory Medical Directors, and Service Line Executives.
The incumbent reports directly to the VP of Operational Integration for the Bay Area. Reporting directly to the Laboratory VP are the Director of Laboratory Services at PAMF, the Laboratory Manager at SEBMF and the Director of Laboratory Services at SPMF. The Laboratory Executive maintains dotted line reporting relationship the with the following: Director of Laboratory Services at CPMC, Director of Laboratory Services at Novato, Asst. Director of Laboratory Services at Alta Bates and Summit, Director of Laboratory Services at Eden, Manager of Laboratory Services at Delta, Director of Laboratory Services at MPHS, Manager of Laboratory Services at Santa Rosa, and Manager of Laboratory Services at Lakeside.','!*!Minimum Job Requirements
Bachelor's degree required
Master's degree in Healthcare Administration / Business Administration is preferred
Clinical Lab Scientist License (CLS-L) preferred
This position requires a minimum of five years’ experience in a healthcare environment, preferably in a large physician practice, health services or hospital setting. Other requirements include:
Prior demonstrated successful experience as a Clinical Laboratory Services leader of a large health system organization is required.
A strong background in all aspects of acute hospital (large and small) and ambulatory environment is required.
Demonstrated ability in healthcare management with excellent experience in personnel management; management and integration of multiple entities; budget preparation and planning for multiple facilities; development and monitoring of staff productivity systems; quality improvement and establishment of quality standards and monitors; and development of other key management control systems for multi-entities is essential.
Experience in creating a strategic business plan and growth plan is required.
Both a strong clinical background and strong experience in working with physician Clinical Laboratory Medical Directors and Medical Group Leadership is critical.
Experience working collaboratively with staff, key stakeholders and customers to achieve strategic outcomes.
Demonstrated success in major project coordination, implementation of successful cost containment initiatives, and contract negotiation is required.
Management experience in a union environment is preferred.
Experience in selecting, purchasing, planning and implementing Clinical Laboratory equipment as well as Laboratory Information Systems is preferred.
Skills and Knowledge:
Candidates will possess extensive knowledge of Clinical Laboratory Services operations in acute and non-acute/ambulatory settings in establishing work processes, quality and productivity standards, and policies and procedures designed to ensure optimal departmental performance. Other requirements include a comprehensive understanding of:
A comprehensive knowledge of all JCAHO, College of American Pathologists (CAP) Title 22/State, federal, state licensing, and other local regulations as they relate to Clinical Laboratory Services is required.
Knowledge of technological advancements, labor savings procedures and equipment, Clinical Laboratory sophisticate equipment for all sectional areas; Clinical Laboratory information systems, and other state-of-the-art departmental specific systems is required.
The ability to stay on the cutting edge of laboratory industry trends and understanding what capabilities, strategies and partnerships we will need to ensure we have an affordable, accessible, and high quality lab network.
Excellent team leadership and organizational skills are required.
Facilitation skills are required.
Ability to assess opportunities for, and implement, operational efficiencies.
An ability to prioritize multiple demands and projects is critical.
Ability to lead and prepare laboratory services for success in an uncertain healthcare future.
Proven written and oral communication skills demonstrating excellent interpersonal skills are required in order to coordinate effective regional integration that meets service needs as well as Administrative, physician, nursing and departmental needs in the various entities.
An excellent background and ability to form strong physician relations with the various Clinical Laboratory Medical Directors, Medical Group Leadership as well as with nursing, ER and other key departments is required.
An ability to thrive in a matrix structured environment.
An ability to build teams and facilitate consensus is crucial.
Ability to deal with complex situations and a large degree of variation in policies, rules and regulations is critical.
Flexibility, adaptability, and creativity and innovation are required.
Must be a self-starter with a high degree of initiative and ability to work independently.
An ability to meet deadlines and implement projects effectively across multiple entities is an integral part of the work responsibilities.
Sensitivity to the confidential nature of strategic planning
Must also be adept in use of personal computers.
Demonstrated experience in the use of word processing, graphics and spreadsheet software is required.
