University Of Louisiana Facing Layoffs; Cuts Totaling $21.2 Million
By todd

louisiana_160x120The University Of Louisiana has announced cuts totaling $21.2 million to alleviate the state’s budget gap. Included in the cuts will be terminating 42 currently filled positions and extinguishing 81 additional positions.

The University of Louisiana at Lafayette will lose $4.6 million while Southeastern Louisiana University, located in Hammond, LA, will be left with $3.6 million in cuts.

“Our universities are doing the best they can to minimize the impacts of these devastating cuts, but the fact is we are bleeding,” said Randy Moffett, the president of the University of Louisiana school system. “It may have started out as a minor cut, but the bandage keeps getting ripped off and soon our campuses may not have the ability to heal without permanent scarring.”

Spokeswoman for the University of Louisiana, Jackie Tisdale, said that over 300 courses would be cut throughout the eight campuses, which will save around $7 million.

Governor Bobby Jindal faced a revenue shortfall of $248 million this year. Reacting to this, Jindal ordered all state agencies to generate a list of proposed cuts. So far, only some of the Louisiana State Universities have submitted their proposals.
