 Dated: 08-05-2013

A company that has high turnovers will suffer losses every time an employee leaves and a new one is appointed because there is time, money and effort involved in training and acclimatising the employee to the culture of the company. When you want to retain and motivate employees and ensure that they give their best to their work, here is what you can do:

  1. Take Personal Interest in Each One of Your Employees - In Japan, the country where work ethics are the highest, the employers, managers, and supervisors know each employee by name as well the name of their spouses and details about their family. You may not be able to go to such lengths, but you definitely need to build a rapport with each one of your employees. Take active interest in every person who works under you and you will have the loyalty of your employees.

It is important that you are available to meet one-on-one with any employee who wishes to talk with you about personal and/or professional matters. Develop a culture where they could come and discuss anything that troubles them with you.

  2. Be Quick to Praise and Slow to Criticise - When your employees do a great job, be quick to praise. One of the greatest employee motivation factors for employees is recognition and appreciation. This makes the employees feel appreciated and needed.

  3. Allow Employees Autonomy within Their Job's Purview - Employees feel motivated when they are trusted to make decisions on their own and when they are treated like responsible and trusted members of the company.

  4. Show Appreciation through Tangible Gifts - It is not really important how much the gift costs, but how appropriate it is. For example, let's say that you know that one of your employees loves strawberries and you find a super fresh organic batch. You get the strawberries for the employee, telling him you thought of him when you saw the fruits. This is an excellent employee motivation factor. Be careful though, that these kinds of gifts do not come across as a sexual advance, as this is inappropriate for the workplace.
