As far as what computer science graduates can do to set themselves apart, I would say the most important factor is experience. College courses teach programming basics, but it takes practice to become a good engineer. When I'm hiring employees straight out of college I'm looking for either internship experience or demonstrable work on projects outside of their curriculum. When I have a candidate come to me excited about something they built on their own, especially if it's related to my field, they immediately move to the top of my list.
