Ways to Answer “Tell Me About Yourself” at Interviews

 Dated: 07-12-2013

Interviews can be nerve wracking experiences, especially with the easy, yet difficult questions that you have to answer. Getting the answers right isn't the problem. Just making a good impression while you're answering is more important. It would be great if there was a cheat sheet that candidates could use to nail an interview, but there isn't. So what's left for you to do is learn how to be clear, concise and confident with your answers. Likely, you have been asked the dreadful question: Can you tell me about yourself? This seems like a simple question, but for a lot of people, it can be hard to answer. If you struggle to answer this question, use these tips to help you out.

Ways to answer this question:
  • "I can use three words to summarize who I am." If that doesn't grab recruiters' attention, they weren't interested in the first place. This is an attention grabber that you have to use to your advantage. Be sure to choose three words that accurately portray who you are and why they would want you on their team, such as creative, deadline-driven and confident.

  • "I live my life by this quotation…" This type of statement will showcase your personal development and your ability to self-motivate.

  • "My own philosophy is…" Employers like to go after thinkers, not just workers. Hopefully, you have a philosophy that is worthy in their eyes.

  • "When I was young, I wanted to be…" Show the employer that you were always looking forward to this line of work. This beats looking like you just decided to apply for the heck of it.

  • "This morning, I Googled myself and found…" If you want to show that you are a cool, tech-savvy person, then this would be the thing to say, especially if you are applying to a company that is young or young at heart.

  • "My true passion is…" Let the employer know who you are through what you're most passionate about. This is a great way to unearth who you are, rather than what you do.

  • "The people closest to me would say I'm…" Self-awareness is a definite plus to recruiters because it shows that you can self-evaluate and possibly improve your weaknesses.

  • "If my life story was made into a Hollywood movie, it would be called…" Use a title that is engaging and interesting.

  • "The compliment I receive most often is…" This is like a testimonial, but also shows your self-awareness and your ability to accept feedback.

  • "How about I show you, instead of tell you?" It would be hard to forget an answer like this. Pull something out that showcases who you are as a person or employee (photograph, award, etc.)
You can also use these interview tips when you're out at a networking event. Hopefully, one of these answers will help you to land a job that you've always wanted.
