About Franklin County, OH Government: Franklin County was authorized to be created by the state government on 30^th March, 1803. Originally, the county was a part of the Ross County. The residents named the county to honor Benjamin Franklin. Columbus in Franklin County became the state capital of Ohio in 1816.

Before the decision of the state legislature in 1812, the Columbus city had not existed. It was then designed exclusively as the state capital to prepare it for its role in the state's social, economic and political life. By 1816, Franklin County and Columbus grew significantly. The county is home today to Ohio State University, the largest university in the country which had 56,867 enrolled students on the main Columbus campus in fall 2011.
