Company History: Prior to 2009, the company was known as Merrill Lynch & Co., Inc. It traded in New York Stock Exchange with the ticker symbol MER. The company was founded by Charles E. Merrill on January 6, 1914. Within a few months Edmund C. Lynch, a personal friend of Charles E. Merrill joined the company. In 1940, following Lynch’s death, the company merged Cassatt & Co., of Philadelphia and was briefly known as “Merrill Lynch, E. A. Pierce, and Cassatt.”
The company followed the policy of a series of mergers with other financial companies including Fenner & Beane, C.J Devine & Co., and White Weld & Co., among others, and finally it merged itself with Bank of America and surrendered its separate business identity.
