Company History: Prior to 2009, the company was known as Merrill Lynch & Co., Inc. It traded in New York Stock Exchange with the ticker symbol MER. In 2008, the recession years, Merrill Lynch faced tremendous hardship and decided to sale of its business to the Bank of America and merged with its principal.




The company was founded by Charles E. Merrill on January 6, 1914. Within a few months Edmund C. Lynch, a personal friend of Charles E. Merrill joined the company. In 1940, following Lynch’s death, the company merged Cassatt & Co., of Philadelphia and was briefly known as “Merrill Lynch, E. A. Pierce, and Cassatt.”

The company followed the policy of a series of mergers with other financial companies including Fenner & Beane, C.J Devine & Co., and White Weld & Co., among others, and finally it merged itself with Bank of America and surrendered its separate business identity.
