Interview and resume tips:

1. Good timing. Check with the hiring retail store director if you are applying to a grocery store chain to find out when is a good time for them to interview you. Generally, store directors are very busy people and usually have very limited time to speak with interviewees, but if you schedule some specific time to meet with them that is best way to go in the process of trying to get a floral job.

2. Resume. Remember to bring copies of your resume with you to your interview. Be sure to update all information on your resume including recent and past jobs, updated contact information, and any other information pertaining to your resume.

3. Pretty portfolio. As a florist you will need a portfolio of your work. Obtain a binder, clear page protectors and color print outs of your floral designs. A portfolio counts for a lot in the floral business because it shows your talent as a florist and what you can do professionally. You can also take pictures of your creations and burn them to a CD to include with your paper portfolio. These images can also be emailed along with your resume to potential employees.

4. Keep it small. If you have small items that you have created like corsages and small arrangements then bring them to the interview. You will be surprised at the attention you will get and you will be able to show off some of the work you have done.

5. Floral Shops. Interviewing with floral shops (large and small) is just as important as interviewing with grocery store floral departments. Opening your eyes to all employment options will help you get the floral job of your dreams. Be open to take a starting job in the field and work up to the top floral positions like floral manager or maybe the owner of your own shop.

6. License. Bring a copy of your floral license to the interview to show your credentials. Many potential employees will only hire licensed florists (this is mostly in the state of Louisiana).

Whatever type of floral job you wish there are plenty of opportunities to choose from in the field. Whether you choose a grocery store floral job or one where you work at an independent floral shop you will be sure to enjoy the job.
